Antioxidant and cell-protective - hemp seed oil for skin problems
Traditional Use of the Hemp Plant
The hemp plant (Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil) originally comes from Central Asia and is one of the oldest cultivated plants. It was cultivated in China and Persia around 12,000 years ago. In addition to its traditional use as industrial hemp for clothing, rope and canvas, hemp is also consumed as an intoxicant because of its content of the cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Intoxicating cannabis products such as marijuana or hashish are obtained from the mature, dried female inflorescences of the hemp plant. They have a psychoactive effect, which means they have a massive influence on the psyche.
hemp oil and CBD (cannabidiol)
In addition to the narcotic THC, cannabinoids also include the active ingredient cannabidiol, abbreviated to CBD, which has so far been little researched and about which there are many positive reports. CBD or hemp extract oil is also extracted from hemp flowers. In contrast to marijuana, however, only hemp varieties that are free of THC are used. CBD oil is used in alternative medicine because of its soothing effects on chronic pain such as joint pain in osteoarthritis and arthritis, asthma, multiple sclerosis or the side effects of cancer chemotherapy (nausea, vomiting). Medicines containing CBD have been approved in Germany without a prescription since 2017. However, there have so far been no studies on the long-term side effects of CBD, for example on the hormonal system.
Effects of hemp seed oil on skin problems
Cannabis seed oil plays an important role in the care of problematic skin thanks to its special composition of fatty acids and antioxidants:
- Improves moisture retention - Due to its gamma-linolenic acid content, hemp oil binds moisture in the skin, protects against drying out and premature skin aging. Hemp oil therefore has a smoothing effect on the skin structure.
- Inhibits inflammation - hemp oil contains stearidonic acid, which counteracts chronic inflammation. Impure, inflamed skin that is prone to spots and acne particularly benefits from hemp oil.
- Strengthens the skin's own immune system - hemp oil soothes the skin and relieves irritated, reddened problem skin such as neurodermatitis or psoriasis.
Quality characteristics of hemp seed oil
Hemp oil used in cosmetics is usually heated to high temperatures, deodorized and refined so that it is colorless, odorless and tasteless. The advantage for cosmetics manufacturers is a high oil yield, a lower price and a long shelf life of the oil. With gentle cold pressing, however, the oil yield is significantly lower. 10 kg of hemp seeds only produce around 3 kg of the valuable cannabis seed oil, which has a legally defined maximum THC content of 0.3%. The slightly greenish oil smells pleasantly fresh like cut grass.
The cold-pressed hemp seed oil we use for myrto natural cosmetics comes from regional organic cultivation. The gentle processing ensures that the valuable secondary plant substances, vitamins and sensitive unsaturated fatty acids are completely preserved.
Active ingredients in cold-pressed hemp seed oil
Hemp seed oil is enjoying increasing popularity in beauty care for mature, but also for sensitive, irritated and impure skin. The cold-pressed hemp seed oil owes its diverse effects to its skin-like fatty acid pattern, its secondary plant substances and its trace elements:
- Gamma-linolenic acid - This polyunsaturated fatty acid improves the skin's moisture retention and ensures a beautifully smooth complexion. This makes hemp seed oil ideal for irritations, redness, dry and irritated skin.
- Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids - These essential unsaturated fatty acids are present in cold-pressed hemp seed oil in an ideal ratio of 1:3. The skin-like fatty acid pattern strengthens the skin's natural acid mantle and makes it more resistant to damaging environmental influences.
- Antioxidants - They fight cell-damaging free radicals and delay skin aging for a visible anti-aging effect. Hemp seed oil mainly contains regenerating vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), vitamin B1, chlorophyll and beta-carotene.
- Phytosterols - These secondary plant substances in hemp seed oil inhibit inflammation and soothe itching. Hemp seed oil is therefore particularly recommended for impure skin, pimples, acne, neurodermatitis and psoriasis.
- Zinc, iron, calcium, copper, magnesium and potassium - these trace elements in hemp oil stimulate the renewal of collagen fibers and ensure firm, tight skin.
