Facial peeling - the key to radiant skin

Facial scrubs are an effective way to remove dead skin cells, stimulate skin renewal, and refine the complexion. They help with various skin concerns such as blemishes, dryness, wrinkles, or dark spots. However, not every scrub is suitable for every skin type. Learn more about the different types of facial scrubs and how to use them correctly.

What types of facial scrubs are there?

Facial peels can be divided into different categories, depending on the active ingredient and how they work:

Mechanical peels

Mechanical exfoliators contain small abrasive particles (e.g., from apricot kernels, jojoba beads, or bamboo) that gently massage away dead skin cells. They are suitable for normal to oily skin, but should not be used on sensitive or inflamed skin.

Chemical acid peels

  • BHA (beta hydroxy acids) – particularly suitable for impure and oily skin.
  • AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) – ideal for dry, mature and normal skin.
  • PHA (polyhydroxy acids) – particularly suitable for sensitive or dry skin as they are less irritating than AHA or BHA peels.

Enzymatic peels

Enzyme peels use natural enzymes (e.g., from papaya or pineapple) to gently loosen dead skin cells. They cause minimal irritation and are particularly suitable for very sensitive skin. Enzyme peels work exclusively on the skin's surface and are therefore even gentler than PHA peels, which use their chemical action to break the bonds between dead skin cells.

BHA facial scrub for impure skin

Acne-prone skin especially benefits from a BHA peel with salicylic acid , which penetrates deep into the pores, dissolves excess sebum, and prevents clogs. The benefits include:

  • Unclogs pores: Penetrates deep into the pores, removing excess sebum.
  • Helps against acne, blackheads and oily skin: Has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
  • refines the skin's appearance: reduces acne scars and marks.
  • Regulates sebum production: prevents excessive oiliness.

AHA facial scrub for dry and mature skin

For dry and mature skin, an AHA peel with glycolic acid or lactic acid is ideal. An AHA peel works more on the surface of the skin, where it loosens dead skin cells, creates a more even complexion, and locks in moisture.

Benefits of an AHA peeling

  • Promotes skin renewal: Removes dead skin cells and stimulates cell renewal.
  • Evens out skin tone: Reduces hyperpigmentation and softens sun damage.
  • Works against fine lines: Can help reduce the first signs of skin aging.
  • Moisturizes: AHAs bind water, which hydrates the skin.
  • Improves skin texture: Makes skin smoother and more radiant.

PHA facial scrub for sensitive skin

Benefits of a PHA peel

  • Gentle exfoliation: PHA peels are even milder than AHAs and are particularly suitable for sensitive, dry skin or rosacea.
  • Moisturizing & skin barrier strengthening: PHA peels bind moisture and support the skin's protective barrier, reducing dryness and irritation.
  • Antioxidant effect: PHAs act as antioxidants and protect the skin from free radicals and premature skin aging.
  • More sun-friendly than AHAs: Due to their larger molecular structure, PHAs penetrate less deeply into the skin, making the skin less sensitive to UV rays.

Applying a facial scrub

To ensure your facial scrub has the best possible effect, you should use it correctly:

  • Cleansing: Apply the scrub to cleansed skin.
  • Application time: Depending on the type of peeling, leave on for a few minutes.
  • Rinse or leave on: Mechanical peels are rinsed off with water, chemical peels can often remain on the skin.
  • Aftercare: Apply moisturizer or sunscreen (especially after AHA peels).
  • Frequency: Use 1-3 times per week depending on skin type.
