How to properly care for and style curly hair
Curly hair offers many styling options - from voluminous and romantic to wild and unconventional. But curls are often naturally dry, brittle and prone to frizz. They therefore need intensive and special care that is tailored to the respective curl type and hair structure. Here you can find out what type of curl you are and what care your curls need to look defined and shiny.
What type of curls are you?
Not all curls are the same – there are different types of curls that differ in the thickness of the hair fiber, bounce and the structure of the waves.
- Curl type 1: Fine, wavy hair
Fine, loose waves often lie close to the head and have a slight S-shape. They tend to hang out and need more volume and definition for a natural hold. For this hair type, a light care approach is important that supports the wave shape without weighing the hair down. - Curl type 2: Medium curls with rough cuticles
Medium-thick, curly hair is more resilient and has distinct waves. Due to the rough cuticle, it tends to be dry and frizzy and requires care that moisturizes and smoothes the hair structure. - Curl type 3: Thick, very curly hair
Thick corkscrew curls or small ringlets are often voluminous, strong and bouncy. However, they are particularly prone to dryness and frizz. To define the curls, this hair type needs rich care products that provide moisture and shine.
More moisture for defined curls and waves
Curly and wavy hair needs a lot of moisture and mild care products. Here are the most important tips:
- Gentle cleansing without silicones and alcohol
Use a shampoo without harmful ingredients such as silicones and alcohol. For curl types 1 and 2, the Ultramild Free Bio Shampoo is ideal, supplemented by occasional Purifying Free Bio Shampoo to remove deposits. For particularly dry curl type 3, the Sea Buckthorn Chia Bio Shampoo is suitable, which preserves the moisture in the hair fiber. - Fewer but effective hair washes
Do not wash curly hair too often and avoid hot water to preserve the natural lipid layer. Two washes per week are usually sufficient, alternatively you can just rinse with lukewarm water. - Conditioners and hair treatments for smooth hair structure
An organic conditioner without surfactants and alcohol smoothes the hair fiber and evens out unevenness. A rich organic hair treatment should be used at least once a week. This should be left in the hair or allowed to work for a long time before rinsing. Avoid the roots so that the volume is maintained.
More volume for beautifully defined curls
For slightly wavy and fine hair (curly types 1 and 2), care products that give volume and grip are particularly important:
- Volume building with natural finisher sprays
The organic finisher gels based on organic aloe vera gel and hydrating betaine from sugar beet give the hair fullness and protection from heat. Shine-enhancing wheat proteins strengthen the hair fiber and provide hold when blow-drying or styling with a straightener or curling iron.
More shine and flexible hold for curly hair
To shape waves and curls and keep them smooth, a light styling product such as hair wax is recommended:
- Organic Argan Hair Wax for Defined Styling
The organic argan hair wax provides flexible hold and a shiny look. This styling all-rounder is suitable for every curl type and contains nourishing ingredients such as candelilla wax, argan and babassu oil, which strengthen the hair fiber and promote healthy hair growth.
Prevent frizz and split ends
Frizz and split ends are common problems with curly hair. With the right care, both can be effectively reduced:
- Antistatic hair oil against frizz
The organic antistatic hair oil with cold-pressed macadamia oil protects the hair tips and prevents split ends. It forms a thin, elastic protective film around the hair fiber and ensures smooth, shiny curls. This leave-in oil can be washed out again even after a longer exposure time.
Tips for proper handling
Curly hair not only needs the right care, but also the right handling:
- Gentle combing
For curly hair, it is best to use a wide-toothed comb and comb the hair as little as possible so as not to separate the curls too much. This will keep the curls in place and give them a defined look. Often it is enough to gently untangle the curls with your fingers.
With the right care and gentle treatment, curly hair not only looks well-groomed and shiny, but also retains its natural bounce and shape.
Curls need targeted care that meets the specific needs of different curl types. With the optimal combination of moisture, structure care and gentle styling, you can achieve defined and healthy curls that retain their individual charm and shine.
