Scalp Dandruff – An Overview of the Types and Causes
Scalp flakes are small, shed skin particles that are naturally formed as a result of the scalp renewing itself. These flakes are usually removed when you wash your hair and remain invisible. However, visible flakes often indicate that the scalp is out of balance. Dandruff can build up particularly in the cold season when dry heating air puts strain on the scalp. There are basically two types of scalp flakes that have different causes and therefore need to be treated differently:
- Dry scalp flakes
- Oily scalp flakes
Dandruff is often caused by incorrect hair care, such as blow-drying hair at too high a temperature or using shampoos with aggressive ingredients that irritate the scalp. Skin diseases such as neurodermatitis or psoriasis can also increase dandruff formation. In cases of oily dandruff, the yeast fungus Malassezia Furfur often plays a role, which multiplies when sebum is produced too much.
A balanced diet with adequate vitamins and minerals (e.g. B vitamins, vitamin C, E, iron, zinc and folic acid) also supports scalp health. The following sections explain the two main types of dandruff in detail.
Oily scalp flakes
Recognizing oily scalp dandruff and causes
Oily dandruff is typically larger, yellowish and adheres to the scalp and hair. Its formation is often related to excess sebum production and the activity of the yeast Malassezia Furfur . This fungus feeds on the sebum of the skin glands and is part of the normal scalp flora. However, when there is excess sebum growth, the fungus can disrupt the scalp flora, secrete skin-irritating substances and cause oily dandruff. Factors such as hormonal imbalances, stress, skin conditions and excessive sweating can also contribute to the development of oily dandruff.
Treatment of oily scalp dandruff
Here are some tips for treating and preventing oily dandruff:
- Reduce hair washing: Wash your hair two to three times a week to avoid unnecessary stress on the scalp.
- Use lukewarm water: Water that is too hot can further irritate the scalp.
- Adjust your diet: A low-sugar diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables can have a positive effect on sebum production.
Conventional dandruff shampoos can provide quick relief, but often only in the short term. They often contain chemical substances such as ketoconazole, climbazole, tar or zinc pyrithione, which work against the fungus but can damage the scalp flora and further stimulate sebum production. Many of these ingredients also have skin-irritating side effects and are difficult to biodegrade.
The organic anti-dandruff shampoo uses a plant-based lactylate active ingredient complex that has a long-term effect against the scalp fungus Malassezia . Sage and rosemary also contain natural ingredients that gently regulate the flow of sebum and bring the scalp into balance. For milder dandruff problems, we recommend the Myrtle Tea Tree Organic Shampoo , which regulates sebum production in a natural way.
In addition, the organic scalp treatment F can help to regulate the scalp sustainably. The serum is free of alcohol and irritating additives and contains:
- Lactylate complex: works against oily dandruff.
- Salicylic acid: From willow bark, helps to loosen dead skin on the scalp.
- Burdock root extract: Promotes healthy hair growth.
- Niacinamide (vitamin B3): Reduces sebum production and strengthens hair.
Dry scalp flakes
Recognizing dry scalp dandruff and causes
Dry dandruff is smaller, whitish and usually falls off the scalp. It is often caused by external factors such as dry heating air in winter or aggressive surfactants in shampoos that dry out the scalp. Excessive use of chemical treatments, hot blow-drying or skin conditions such as neurodermatitis and psoriasis can also promote dry dandruff.
