Licorice root (Glycorrhiza Glabra Root Extract) - controlled organic cultivation

Licorice is best known in the form of licorice, which is made from thickened root juice. The licorice plant is an anti-inflammatory medicinal plant that has been shown to soothe skin irritations, reduce itching and promote wound healing. It has been used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for many centuries.

The perennial licorice plant is originally native to the Mediterranean region and western Asia. Today it is grown not only in Spain, France and Italy, but also in Asia, Australia and America. The purple or white flowering licorice plant with its feathery leaves belongs to the Fabaceae family. It can grow up to 1.50 metres tall and has a yellow, woody root with a variety of different active substances. The sweetening power of the licorice root with its dark juice is around 30 - 50 times higher than sugar.

Effects of Licorice Tea

The healing tea made from licorice root has an expectorant effect and relieves coughing. Licorice tea is also highly recommended for gastrointestinal complaints due to its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, like other medicinal plants, licorice tea should not be taken for long periods of time or too often, as it can cause blood pressure to rise if overdosed.

active ingredients of licorice root

  • One of the active ingredients is the anti-inflammatory Licocholcone A, which has been proven soothing for irritated and reddened skin works.
  • The coumarin found in licorice root improves the tolerability of other active ingredients such as vitamin C or niacinamide in highly sensitive or allergy-prone skin.
  • The glycyrrhizin it contains has antibacterial, antiviral and fungicidal properties.
  • Another active ingredient in licorice root is glabridin, which lightens pigment spots.
  • Carotenoids and zinc in licorice root have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects against premature skin aging. They also promote the detoxification and healing of damaged tissue. The antioxidant effect of licorice root as a radical scavenger is, depending on the origin of the plant, up to 3 times stronger than that of tocopherol (vitamin E).

Licorice root for sensitive, problematic and irritated skin

Liquorice root extract in cosmetics has proven particularly effective in the treatment of skin diseases such as rosacea, atopic dermatitis (neurodermatitis) or perioral dermatitis, in which the skin is very irritated, red and rough. The symptoms were significantly improved, as an international clinical study was able to demonstrate. Skin sensitization is not known to date.
