Bakuchiol
Bakuchiol plant extract (bakuchiol)
Bakuchiol is extracted from the seeds of the Babchi plant through a complex cold pressing process. Native to India and Sri Lanka, Babchi belongs to the legume family. In Ayurvedic medicine as well as in traditional Chinese medicine, Bakuchiol has been used for centuries. Bakuchiol is a 100% plant-based skin care ingredient that is considered a non-irritating, natural alternative to the chemical anti-aging ingredient retinol (vitamin A). Although the plant extract has a completely different chemical structure than retinol, its effects are very similar to vitamin A acid.
While retinol sensitizes the skin to sunlight and often causes irritation, redness or burning, this is not the case with bakuchiol. Bakuchiol has proven to be very well tolerated even by sensitive skin. While the use of retinol in sunshine damages the skin and the active ingredient is therefore only suitable as a night cream, a bakuchiol serum can be used without concern even in sunlight. Skin care products containing bakuchiol are also suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The main benefits of Bakuchiol are:
- stimulates the skin's own collagen production,
- counteracts skin aging and neutralizes cell-damaging free radicals,
- improves skin elasticity,
- reduces hyperpigmentation, promotes an even complexion,
- does not make the skin sensitive to light, unlike retinol,
- counteracts inflammation and skin impurities such as pimples and acne,
- can be used in combination with stabilized vitamin C (such as Ascorbyl Glucoside) and acids (but not together with acid peels, as this could lead to overstimulation and skin reactions),
- Bakuchiol is suitable for all skin types: sensitive, dry, oily as well as sensitive combination skin.
