babassu oil
Babassu oil ( Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil) - controlled organic cultivation
The babassu palm is native to the Amazon basin. It grows up to 30 m tall and bears long, nut-like, hard stone fruits. The unrefined organic babassu oil (Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil) we use is decanted and purely mechanically filtered so that all valuable ingredients are retained. Natural babassu oil is golden yellow, has a pleasant nutty scent and becomes solid at temperatures below 24 degrees Celsius. When heated to body temperature, it melts and creates a silky soft skin feel.
Babassu oil is absorbed particularly quickly by the skin and gives a pleasant cooling sensation on the skin. Due to its high content of lauric acid, babassu oil has been proven to inhibit inflammatory processes. It counteracts skin impurities and protects dry skin from moisture loss. Babassu oil forms a thin protective film on the skin against aggressive environmental influences. Babassu oil contains a high proportion of vitamin E tocotrienols, which act as effective antioxidants and slow down the natural aging of cells. Babassu oil gives hair structure and additional shine, and strengthens the hair fiber.
Our organic babassu oil comes from a fair trade project run by Brazilian women in the north-east of the country. Around 500 families, who have joined together to form the COPPALI cooperative, make their living from the traditional production of organic babassu oil. Through this fair trade project, the babassu crackers receive a 40% better price for their goods than they would get on the local market. In the cooperative, all parts of the babassu palm are used sustainably in the traditional way: the trunk and leaves are used to build houses, everyday objects are made from the plant fibers, the leaves are used to fertilize the fields, and vegetable charcoal is made from the shell of the babassu fruit. The mesocarp, the layer between the shell and the kernel, serves as a nutrient-rich porridge for the children. The protein-rich press cake, the residue from oil extraction from the kernel, is finally fed to the animals.
