Tips for Sunburn

People with fair skin are particularly susceptible to sunburn on the face, which, depending on the severity, can be accompanied by symptoms such as redness, swelling and pain. The particularly exposed areas such as the nose, forehead and cheeks, also known as sun terraces, turn red the fastest.

Can a sunscreen provide 100% UV protection?

The truth is: Unfortunately, no amount of mineral or chemical sunscreen can protect you 100% from the harmful effects of ultraviolet and infrared radiation on your skin. A sunscreen with SPF (sun protection factor) 30 reflects or absorbs around 97% of UV radiation, while a sunscreen with SPF 50 reflects or absorbs only slightly more, namely 98% of UV rays. Therefore, if you spend too long in the sun and are exposed to strong UV radiation, you can still get sunburn even if you have applied a sunscreen with a very high SPF.

How does the skin react to too much sun?

Signs of sunburn include redness, tightness, itching or spots. As a result, the reddened skin is stimulated to produce more tanning melanin to protect the cells from damage. However, this tan is only short-lived. When the sunburn heals, the skin becomes dry and flakes or peels a few days later.

Sunburn ranges from mild redness to blistering, which is equivalent to a second-degree burn and should be treated like a burn. Sunburn usually takes 2 to 7 days for the acute symptoms to subside.

The known harmful consequences of repeated sunburns and too much sun are accelerated skin aging, pigment spots, the risk of skin cancer (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma) or sun allergy (lucitis).

What to do if your face gets sunburned?

If your skin is stressed and oversensitive after prolonged exposure to strong sun, here are some tips to help soothe your complexion and speed up healing naturally:

Cooling Facial Toner

  • Cooling the skin
Cool your face with a damp cloth or soothe it with aloe vera compresses. However, avoid using water that is too cold to prevent further irritation.
  • Replenish moisture reserves

myrto Bio Magnolia Toner

Skin that is dehydrated after extensive sunbathing benefits from aloe vera gel and high-dose, multi-molecular hyaluronic acid. The Magnolia Toner Sensitive provides the skin with additional moisture, relieves redness, tightness and itching. The toner prevents the upper layer of skin (epidermis) from peeling. The Magnolia Toner is gently applied to the irritated areas of skin several times a day. Sunburn can dehydrate the entire body. Therefore, drink at least 1.5 liters of water or unsweetened tea to compensate for the loss of fluids.

Soothing Facial Serum

      myrto Calming Facial Serum
      • Soothe the skin
The Magnolia Calming Serum is a moisturizer that soothes sensitive and sun-reddened skin.
      • No skin-irritating ingredients
Avoid products with skin-irritating and controversial ingredients such as chemical preservatives, sulfates, silicones, plasticizers or fragrances, which further irritate and dry out irritated skin. It's good to know that all myrto facial care products are free of fragrances, alcohol, preservatives, emulsifiers and chemical additives.
      • antioxidants
If you strengthen your skin's resistance to free radicals before summer with suitable care, you will also reduce the risk of sunburn.

      Antioxidant facial serums

Astaxanthin, vitamins A, C, E, bakuchiol and sea buckthorn oil are particularly suitable as antioxidants against the damaging effects of solar radiation. Astaxanthin from the blood rain algae is considered one of the strongest antioxidants of all and is known for its photoprotective properties. Sea buckthorn oil contains a high proportion of beta-carotene or provitamin A, vitamins C and E. It is used successfully in radiotherapy to combat tumors.

        myrto Anti-Pollution Serum

To support your skin's defenses against UV radiation, we particularly recommend our Vitamin ACE Serum, Vitamin C Serum and Anti-Pollution Serum.

A healthy diet with regional and seasonal fresh berries, carrots, apples, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes also provides the body with important antioxidants and improves the protection of your skin against the effects of cell-damaging free radicals.

        Regenerating Facial Oil

        Myrto Organic Facial Oil

High-quality facial oils are cold-pressed, non-comedogenic and organic, free from any additives. They improve the skin's moisture retention, intensify and prolong the summer tan. When used all year round, myrto facial oils promote the skin's elasticity and tone. Argan oil, jojoba oil and grape seed oil are particularly well tolerated when caring for dry, reddened and irritated facial skin with itching, tightness and pimples.

        Deep-acting facial mask

        Myrto face masks

After the UV rays have not only removed moisture from your skin, but also the skin's own lipids (fats), the rich myrto face masks offer the deep-acting after-sun care that your stressed, sun-damaged skin now needs to replenish its storage reserves. The face masks contain powerful active ingredients and antioxidants in high concentrations. They rebuild the skin's protective barrier, improve moisture retention, and smooth and soothe the skin.
