Switching to a new facial care product - what should you consider?
A new facial care regimen for your skin is comparable to a change in diet for your body. If you previously had ready-made products with white flour and refined sugar on your menu and then switch to whole grain products and nutrient-rich fresh food, your digestion may initially react violently.
Initial aggravation or intolerance?
In some cases, a new facial care product may also require a little patience until your skin gets used to the individual ingredients. This is often referred to as an "initial worsening", although this is not actually the right term. It may be more of a detoxification process. Your skin then reacts with a temporary, slight feeling of tension, with slight redness that quickly subsides, or with increased blemishes in typical breakout areas.
However, if the skin irritation persists in a severe form, this may indicate an intolerance to one or more ingredients. If the concentration of an active ingredient is (still) too high for your skin, this can also cause allergic reactions. In such a case, you should stop using the product immediately until your skin has calmed down.
How long does it take for the skin to get used to a new facial care routine?
You will usually notice within 2 weeks whether a new facial care product is well tolerated by your skin and improves the condition of your skin. In rare exceptional cases, however, the skin needs longer to get used to individual new ingredients.
Regular skin renewal takes about 28 days. During this period, a skin cell migrates from the lowest layer of skin to the surface of the skin as a corneocyte. Old skin cells on the surface are naturally shed unnoticed as loose skin cells. The older you get, the slower your skin renews itself. Chronic stress, cigarettes and alcohol also slow down skin regeneration.
Tips for switching to a new skin care routine
- Only try one new product at a time. If you add several new products to your skincare routine at the same time, it will be almost impossible to find out which product caused the problems. If your skin tolerated the first product well, you can integrate the next product into your facial care routine after about 4 to 7 days of successful use.
- Avoid using exfoliators while trying out a new facial care product to avoid unnecessary irritation.
- If your skin feels tight when using a serum, we recommend adding 2-3 drops of facial oil to your moisturizer.
- When using facial care products with vitamin C, bakuchiol or niacinamide, you can gradually increase the concentration and frequency of application to gradually get your skin used to it. To start with, it is also a good idea to apply it selectively.
