Switching to a new face care line is like changing the diet for your skin. If you previously had ready-made products with white flour and refined sugar on your menu and then switch to whole grain products and fresh food rich in vital substances, your digestion may react violently at first.
Initial aggravation or intolerance?
In individual cases, even a new facial care product may require a little more patience for your skin to get used to the individual ingredients. An “initial aggravation” spoken, even if this is actually not the right term. Rather, it can be a detoxification. Your skin then reacts with a temporary, slight feeling of tension, with slight reddening that quickly disappears or with increased impurities in typical break-out areas.
If the skin irritation persists, however, this can indicate an intolerance of one or more ingredients. If the concentration of an active ingredient is (still) too high for your skin, this can also cause allergic reactions. In such a case, you should stop using the product immediately until your skin has calmed down.
How long does it take for the skin to get used to a new facial care routine?
You will usually notice within 2 weeks whether a new facial care product is well tolerated by your skin and whether it improves the condition of your skin. In rare exceptional cases, however, the skin also needs longer to get used to individual new ingredients.
Regular skin renewal takes about 28 days. During this period, a skin cell migrates as a corneocyte after its formation from the lowest skin layer to the skin surface. Old skin cells on the surface are naturally shed unnoticed as loose skin cells. The older you get, the slower your skin renews itself. Chronic stress, cigarettes or alcohol also slow down the regeneration of the skin.
Tips for switching to a new skin care product
- Only try 1 new product at a time. When you introduce multiple new products into your skincare routine at the same time, it's almost impossible to figure out which product caused the problems. If your skin has tolerated the first product well, you can integrate the next product into your facial care routine after about 4 to 7 days of successful use.
- Don't scrub while trying out a new face care product. This way you avoid unnecessary irritation.
- If your skin feels tight when using a serum, we recommend that you add 2 – Distribute 3 drops of facial oil over the moisturizer.
- When using facial care with vitamin C, bakuchiol or niacinamide, you can gradually increase the concentration and frequency of use to gradually get your skin used to it. A selective application is also a good way to get started.
