Meanwhile every second woman calls her scalp sensitive or very sensitive, men don’t feel much better. The cause for sensitive, extremely dry and irritated scalp, which spans or itches, can be an allergic disposition, neurodermitic or psoriatic skin. Not infrequently, however, these symptoms are caused by skin-irritating ingredients of conventional shampoos.
These shampoos still contain surfactants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which are known to be irritating to the skin. An increasing number of people react with an intolerance to such tensids. Their irritant effect is neither neutralized by combining them in shampoos for sensitive scalp nor by enriching them with soothing plant extracts or moisturizing oils.
Many do not know that ingredients of conventional shampoos such as surfactants, emulsifiers, preservatives and fragrances do not only harm our hair. Rather, they destroy the protecting acid mantle of our skin, passing through the scalp in the body. These toxins can accumulate in the tissue permanently. Such conventional surfactants also damage the skin's own lipids between the horn cells in the protective cuticle. Thus the important barrier function of the skin can no longer be maintained. As a result, the skin loses moisture, it becomes increasingly dry. Simultaneously the skin's immune protection deteriorates. The scalp becomes permeable to pollutants from the outside, which can penetrate. Some petroleum-based tensids, emulsifiers and preservatives in conventional shampoos are even suspected of being carcinogenic.
No wonder that an increasing number of people switch to high-quality organic shampoos. These consist of purely natural active substances and ingredients, meeting prescribed certification standards for natural cosmetics. They contain neither petroleum-based emulsifiers, mineral oils, silicones nor artificial preservatives and fragrances.
The milder the detergent substances in a shampoo are, the higher the quality and skin compatibility is. At myrto-naturalcosmetics we insert pure plant amino acid-based detergent substances as the principal ones. These surfactants are more expensive by far and the mildest currently available. Mountains of foam as in conventional shampoos are not to be expected. Wash-active amino acids are characterized by fewer but fine-pored, stable foam and extremely gentle cleaning action. The lower foaming has nothing to do with the cleansing power of a shampoo. However, large pores and abundant amounts of foam are an indication of skin-irritating surfactants and should make us very skeptical
